Zendikar’s Treasure is Old Cards?

CONFIRMED – This rumor has been 100% confirmed by an email from John Carter, the Judge Coordinator for Organized Play. Read about the Zendikar Repack Confirmation!

The Magic media are all chattering away as a store has supposedly spoiled opening a booster pack and finding inside it an Antiquities copy of the card Candelabra of Tawnos. The following picture was posted on the store’s site. It is an isolated incident as stores are not supposed to be opening product yet, but this store believes it is in the clear as this is product not earmarked for the pending pre-release.

Candelabra of Tawnos in Zendikar pack?
Original source

Two independent sources have called to verify the claims, Evan Erwin and Kelly Reid.

We have reached out to our contacts and are waiting for confirmation or any comment from Wizards concerning this issue.

Update 8:34am: This seems to be 100% true. More reports have come into the MTGSalvation forums of people opening a number of other old cards including original dual lands, a Mox Diamond and more. This is Magic history in the making for sure.

Update 10:03am: A German store reports opening a Mox Jet after opening 27 boxes of Zendikar.

Update 11:00am: A reliable spoiler source on MTGSalvation says that the distribution is 1 in 20 boxes. Also it is becomign more apparent these cards are not in Mint condition, reportedly they seem to be played and in Near Mint quality. So it looks like Wizards may have purchased the cards from the secondary market.

Update: 1:28pm: Spoke to Jessica our PR Contact for Wizards and at this time she doesn’t have anything to say about the repacks. Though this does not mean she/Wizards won’t have anything in the future. So we would say to expect an announcement on Monday after the pre-releases.

  1. This would be really cool…MTG History…if it is true im glad i have a case preordered, however if its true and i get not one of these “priceless treasures” I will be very unhappy…But honestly as hard as this is to belive why is this so hard to belive? It is paper, not gold…its not a black lotus…why not?
    Hope so…

  2. Heads up. It IS true. In fact, another store person that knew they needed cards for singles opened some product. They do NOT want to tell a soul because they might get in trouble. one of the packs opened was a POWER 9 CARD UNLIMITED WHITE BORDERED NEAR MINT. I have seen the card with my own eyes. No one will believe it until Saturday.

  3. ok so,lets look at some logic behind this… WotC, owned by Hasbro, distributes hundreds and thousands of dollars in cards from their archives randomly into packs of a set that is likely to more then sell out anyway…. all this without even advertising, or announcing the fact? viral marketing isn’t supposed to be that costly. (and before you say secondary market blah blah blah, anyone can open an ebay account and sell cards, even big companies.)

ok sure, fine. someone decides that this is a good idea, and even better is they don’t tell anyone… because a secret like this surely won’t be revealed or believed on the internet…

oh and by some amazing miracle, damn near everyone that had the ability receive and open product early pulls a big expensive vintage card? well jeez, the case i’m getting should have 30 or 40 moxes i guess then…

  4. Does anyone think that the early allocation of this product is the direct result of this repacking.

I wonder if later runs will continue this trend.

  7. I think that they are not secondary market purchases. They are probably fodder from around the WoTC site. I’ll be in Seattle for pre-release, hopefully I can find out more. But Hasbro/WoTC is not going to spend a bunch of money to purchase these cards just to repack them as chases… especially when they could just print them or had them laying around.

  11. Sportscard companies have been doing this for about 5 years, so it’s not THAT hard to believe. I also talked with Mark Rosewater at San Diego Comicon and he was falling all over himself about how this set was gonna be BIG, how it was going to change everything, and that Wizards would be doing something they had never done before. After seeing the spoiler, I had no idea what the big deal was. Maybe this was what he was talking about.

  20. Something i opened myself, i know its now a power 9 but i thought is was awesome got a lotus cobra and a holofoil Sorin Markov in the same pack didnt think this could be done. Two mythics in the same pack and one being holofoil. Needless to say i was freaked out for a little bit……

  21. I ordered a box and was flipping through it to see if i missed any rares and I noticed something called “Library of Alexandria”. So i entered it in starcitygames.com and noticed the 200$ price tag and remembered the “Priceless Treasure” ZEN promotion.
I thought that was pretty darn neat. XD

    Tgunter | January 1, 2010, 2:48 am | #
  22. As for the 2 mythic rares in one pack that is totally possible, although rare. Last Sunday I pulled a foil Mindbreak Trap and a Kalitas, Bloodchief Of Ghet.

This was durring a draft so I had to pick one, so I kelp the foil Mindbreak Trap although I have six already… :(

  23. i bought 9 packs of zendikar and in each one i got a power nine. they re did all the power nine card with zendikar. but the thing is dont expect to sell the for the same price as a original alpha beta. because they a re-issused cards. but if your lucky there might be sumone stupid enough to buy it.

    but i doubt it
