Upper Deck to Cease WoW Products

We just received a tip (confirmed from a second source) that as of today Upper Deck will no longer hold the license to Blizzard Entertainment’s World of Warcraft TCG. That means they will no longer produce any more of the cards for the game. We have not yet heard any word on what will happen next with the game. It seems fairly likely Blizzard will license the game to someone else or open up development internally on the game, not that this is the end of World of Warcraft.

This is most likely tied to the legal issues Upper Deck Entertainment is having after their recent settlement with Konami over the phony Yu-Gi-Oh cards, and more the recent lawsuit with Major League Baseball.

It is highly unlikely that Blizzard will let the game die, though it was doing well enough to support the Pro Series. We’ll keep you all up to date on this as we learn more.

Update: We just spoke with a second source who confirmed above, clarifying that it was never said that they were “losing the license” and that it was an amicable parting of ways. But it does mean that the game is simply dead in the water as far as Upper Deck is concerned. No products that were or have been in the pipeline will be released, this seemed to go for both the TCG and Minis.

This isn’t directly Magic news, but WoW TCG is the other “big” game with a Pro circuit and so news of their health and production are of interest to many Magic players.
