Are the rumors true? Will Player X go all the way? Is card Y as sick as we think? Does the game still have legs?

The answers are: Yes, No, Yes, and Unquestionably yes.

The night before a Pro Tour is both the most exciting and most frustrating night of the event. You see all the pros, they’re talking to all the other pros, and getting cards for even more pros. Some will share their deck. Some won’t. Some will mislead. And some will tease like the cheerleader in high school.

What are they Playing?

The big rumor coming into this weekend was about the Japanese Pros having concocted a G/W/U Ally deck using some nifty tricks. But like Keyser Soze, when you turn to take focus or take hold it melts away as if it was never there. I literally asked two dozen pros about the deck and everyone had heard the rumors, knew pieces of it, but no one actually had the list or knew the list. So what’s the deal?

Here’s what I know:

1. It is a heavy aggro Ally deck, aiming to Alpha strike every turn.
2. Some say it uses Rite of Replication to clone allies and make them do their thing.
3. Some say it runs Jace, the Mind Sculptor primarily so that you can unsummon your own allies to be able to recast them and boost the others.
4. The rumors began when sites noticed a run on their ‘Jwari Shapeshifter‘ so we must presume it will be a key player in this deck.

No one has a list, but every pro is aware of it and few seem overly concerned about it. We’ll see if it is indeed a Japanese invention and if it as sick as we are all led to believe; or will it turn out to be the greatest prank ever pulled on the Magic community?

So what else is getting played? Well, that’s not an easy question to answer either. Let’s first look at a promise Aaron Forsythe made for 2010, and that was that Wizards would be making good Blue Magic cards again. I think it’s safe to say Worldwake was the real seller of this promise.

Evan Erwin poignantly said: “If your deck doesn’t play Jace, the Mind Sculptor then you’re probably playing the wrong deck.” That card truly is sick, disgusting and truly naughty. And the Pros seem to love it.

If you don’t already have a play set of them, you’re going to need them soon. They’re not going anywhere, and especially not going down in price. CoolStuffInc, StarCityGames and other online retailers cannot keep them in stock and they are only going to be harder to get hold of even as they increase in price.

Getting Worldwake

One observation Evan and I shared was that non-Spikes don’t seem to ‘get’ Worldwake. The set is subtle in its Spike-ness, it isn’t Baneslayer in your face. You have to play with it and see the cards in action, their interactions and how they actually perform. This weekend will show the world just how powerful the set actually is.

I think the Top 8 is going to show players that the Bloodbraid Elf / Jund deck is no longer the dominant deck it has been. The other deck’s abilities to disrupt, race, and generate equal card advantage will prove that the deck’s ship has sailed and there are other options (unfortunately all of them will run Jace and/or Baneslayer.)

Magic Festival

The final point I want to discuss is the efforts Wizards is making to pull people to Pro Tours and dispel the belief that they are just for Pros. Every episode and most writers note that there are side events and other things going on at the Pro Tour and yet it never seems to really sink in.

Wizards is going so far as to start trying to spin these stops as a “festival.” The Press Release for Pro Tour San Diego read “Wizards of the Coast brings Magic ‘Festival’ to San Diego.”

When I first read the title I laughed. But after considering it and what they’re trying to do it, it is an admirable effort. A step in the right direction but still rather short in the full effect.

That being said, I think Wizards should just bill these as conventions. They already have vendors, events, special guests, etc.

Or perhaps, as unmanageable as it would be, run Grand Prixes at every Pro Tour to attract the non-pros. And Pros who didn’t make day 2 would be able to participate. That would be really cool, I’m going to wish for that when I blow out my birthday candles in… 8 months… Someone else better do it before then.

On that note, I’m beginning to get loopy, my body thinks it’s nearly 1am (and I’ve been up since 6am) so I’ll wrap this article up. Andre Coimbra of Portugal defeated David Reitbauer to become the 2009 World Champion of Magic. It was an epic battle between Jund and Naya style decks, with Naya coming out on top. Andre is a long time pro, and has been in the Top 8 of Worlds before four years ago in 2005. He has two GP 2nd places to his name. Congratulations to Andre!

China defeated Austria in the finals, coming from the shadows they were definitely the dark horse of the competition. But they were up to the task and they were able to win. They won Legacy 2-1, Extended 2-1 while losing Standard 2-1. Congratulations to China on its team victory.

Buehler was a Vice President for Wizards before he was let go last year, but he remained on in his webcasting role. He is also a member of the Pro Tour Hall of Fame though he is not allowed to compete so long as his wife remains employed at Wizards.

He now works for Mind Twist Games alongside Dr. Richard Garfield working on a yet to be released online game.

The webcasts are an integral part of the enjoyment of the Pro Tour for those unable to attend in person. Upcoming this month is the Magic World Championships in Rome, Italy.

• Added support for states
• More “surprise bonuses” for existing players.

This could be a sizable shift after seeing the organized competitive play contract with the removal of a fourth Pro Tour stop, the loss of a day at Worlds, and the removal of States/Champs. This message, if true, suggests a shift towards feeling ready to expand organized play again given the upswing in interest and players.

That’s the Magic: The Gathering Hall of Fame Mantra. It’s hard to believe that our game has really gotten to a point where we’re recognizing these attributes within a person’s “game”. For a person, like myself, I don’t take this sport lightly nor do I take my position on the Hall of Fame Committee lightly. Not because I’m a power hungry internet podcaster who has had delusions of a pro tour victory over the world, or um at least I don’t think I do. It’s not the biggest task ever, you simply pick 5 people out of a list of people who have compiled 100 or more pro points. What is a big deal to me is these people, if selected into the “Hall”, will gain eternal fame while having a lifetime invitation to the Pro Tour with Level 5 status, a super cool Hall of Fame Ring and invitation to this year’s World Championships. Being a Level 5 player and have an invitation to Worlds is an opportunity some would kill for. Throw in the ring and the eternal fame and you’ve got a pretty nice little package for just being a player with ability, integrity, sportsmanship, a few contributions to the game and be fortunate enough to have performed well in “The Show.”

What I wanted to do with this article is evaluate the finer points of the criteria above and ask your opinion on the potential hall of famers. So, let’s begin by just knocking out Performance. It takes 100 lifetime Pro Points to merely be considered for enshrinement and that’s NO small task. You have to win a major tourney or two to get a considerable amount of points so we don’t really need to talk much about this. I’ve been to quite a few protours with a hand full of grand prix day 2s and have only accumulated 37 points. Now, the DCI wasn’t always so generous in handing out points you get for Grand Prix. You were only given points for top 8s, and before then you didn’t even get pro points. 10 points for winning a grand prix or a national championship and 25 for winning a pro tour or world championship shows that achieving 100 is no slice of cheese. So for that alone, these people are great!

Playing Ability is a relatively vague attribute to determine. All of these individuals have displayed an ability to play the game and win. So, how can we determine a person’s ability to play? At Pro Tour Berlin, guaranteed Hall of Famer Luis Scott Vargas (LSV) won his title after being down in his first top 8 match, he was down for MOST of the top 8. This pro tour displayed the power of the Elf Combo deck which provided the mage who played first a HUGE advantage. LSV’s play skills allowed him to overcome the deficit of being down AND the advantages of his opponent’s play option and snatched the title from some of the world’s best. THAT is playing ability! However, that’s an easy example from a player who is a sure fire first ballot hall of famer. I think that multiple victories is a good measure of ability, but that doesn’t discount the journeyman who has played at a high level and accumulates points through qualifying and decent finishes. That is unless, we determine that there are Performance Enhancing Drugs that provided a distinct advantage over other competitors.

Which leads me to my next item, Integrity. We don’t always have judges viewing play. There are no cameras that view a player’s hand and battlefield. So we put a certain amount of trust in our opponents to play the game. Obviously, it doesn’t always happen. Now, the flipside to this is there’s a contested rule and you call a judge over and that person wins the ruling. It doesn’t make them a cheater. I’ve observed several pros who allow “take backs” or advised of bad moves or inaccuracies that would benefit them and they call for correction, THAT is Integrity.

Sportsmanship, on of the elements that I feel many Magic players today are lacking. The premature “good game” or the absence of the handshake are simple signs of sportsmanship and sometimes excusable or often times overlooked. I’ve viewed MANY of the Japanese players call out their own play mistakes or manaburn. One of Japan’s top players was participating in a limited grand prix trial on a Friday night and had a VERY good sealed pool. This person already had 3 byes for the next day’s event and was undefeated currently in the last round before the byes were awarded. He conceded to his opponent, giving the byes away, and simple said that he needed more practice and didn’t want to cut someone off who would need the byes.

THIS final item is one that truly defines where we stand as players, promoters and members of the Magic world. It is, to me, what a person does outside of playing the game. Whether it be mentoring, reporting, writing or being a goodwill ambassador, ALL of these things are important to the development, promotion and general goodwill of our game. When you look at a person, their demeanor, their actions, their product, one would hope that they’re all done with positive intention. While personal gain is ok too, providing good advice that might help someone achieve a dream or goal overshadows whether that person is getting paid or not (at least in my opinion).

Normally, I look for reasons to put a person into the Hall as opposed to finding reasons to keep them out. However, I think that selection should be a double-edged sword and that winning alone isn’t enough. It’s tough and there are lots of people that I don’t know and for that I’ll need to do some research. What I also wanted to do in conclusion, was to hear what you all have to say about your favorite players or the person you think deserves the Hall of Fame. • Mark Justice – This guy is one of Magic’s FIRST celebrities. He was famous before the internet created famous magic players and famed writer George Baxter made him Iconic. His decks and building theory are still part of the underlying theories behind Mana Ramp Decks and the like. It was an honor just to play during this age.

• Brian Kibler – Kibler wins. Period. What I think is significant about his success, is that he’s done it in different eras. Not a lot of people talk about it, but AGE means a lot in Magic. It’s considered to be a “young man’s game” and Brian has been successful both youth and in recent times. Perhaps we all grow and mature, but winning while growing old and maturing is sweeter than wine. It takes a lot to win at Magic and Brian does it when he wants to.

• Michael Long – EVERY sport has one. John Daly, Dennis Rodman, Mitch Williams, Ron Artest, Clubber Lang they all played a huge part to their sport and it’s not always clear why. The bad guy everyone loves to hate, but has the largest fan turnout. Every sport has one of these to keep it in check. To keep the sport from becoming a mundane pool of people who look and act the same. Mike made “rules lawyering” a profession and forced the DCI and Magic to become better at judging, playing and organizing. People watched him because of his antics, what he would put on the table and possibly what he put under it. He would win, but how he would do it would always come under controversy and speculation. You couldn’t trust the guy when he’s across the table from you, but you’d never know it if you talked to him outside of a match. Two things I can remember from Pro Tour Paris: a Mulligan rule and a Mike Long victory.

• Casey McCarrel - It was during a U.S. National championship, early in the Standard portion of the tourney. I mulligan to 5 first game, 6 the second game and 6 the third game after I asked him to keep his eyes away from the deck when shuffling my deck. Later he was disqualified for stacking opponents’ decks. First hand experience tells all and that’s all I can tell you about Mr. McCarrel.

• Steven O’Mahoney-Schwartz – They might be the ONLY siblings to have reached the 100 point plateau, without being associated to cheating, and that MUST be cool. Darwin Castle is in the Hall and the “brothers O’Mahoney-Schwarts” partnered, teamed and won with their Castle.

• David Price – The epitome of aggro, burn and mountains. David Price would never lead you to believe he played magic. Nor would you ever think he won at it. When he played, however, his cards would be blazing. A class act and a good player.

• Antoine Ruel – The “Other Ruel” brother, Antoine might be the better of the two. In a team Grand Prix Columbus years ago, my team was faced against theirs. They sat down and began speaking Francais. Fortunately for us, one of my team members spoke French fluently. I won’t tell you what was said, but let’s just say the match went more smoothly. It’s sad that the Ruels have controversies that might overshadow their accomplishments, because I KNOW they can play magic. As I said with the O-Brothers, it’s a tremendous accomplishment to have a siblings achieve 100 pro points (actually Antoine has 300+ and brother Oliver has 400+). Much has been said about the Japanese and their talent, but of the top 6 all time pro point holders (where Antoine is currently 6th) 4 are French!!!

• Alex Shvartsman – THE journeyman of Magic. There was a time where Alex and I were neck and neck for THE most matches played in the WORLD. I’m glad one of us was able to capitalize. I’ve said earlier that every sport has elements that are the same and Journeymen are a part of all sports. And, Alex has that crown.

• Ben Stark – “The Boy Genius” we used to call him here in Florida. At the pinnacle of Ben’s success, he took time off to play poker (as many Magic players have). In my mind, he’s missing the titles that would certainly make him a first-balloter. But, he’s back to playing and winning. He’s THAT good.

• David Williams – David’s fame extends into the highly heralded realm of Poker as well. He’s a fantastic personality and obviously a tier one thinker to go with his personality. After his finals appearance at Poker’s main event, I often wondered if he’d lend me 20 bucks hehe. All joking aside, David has accomplished a lot. However, he’s missing an elusive title that helps. He’s still got game in him so don’t think he can’t beat you. For me the biggest positive for David Williams ISN’T his 100+ Pro Points or his success out of the game in poker (which could be equated to being an ambassador), the biggest positive for David Williams is his personality. One of the game’s biggest celebrities and one of the nicest guys.

I’ve mentioned, to a point of reading, Age in magic and Sibling success. Magic is also a game that has many other demographics. The FACT is that Magic is played primarily by Caucasians males ages 14 to 24. We often mention the Japanese, the French, this and that. While he would NEVER mention it, David Williams is the all time leader in Pro Points amongst African American or Black players. I will recognize, in the same manner, when a woman achieves 100 points or someone achieves 100 points AFTER their 40th birthday. It speaks highly about our game’s diversity and I feel I would NOT be doing justice to my position or the committee if I didn’t recognize the differences in all of the individuals above. They’re ALL fine players, but what sets them apart is what I look for. I’m not voting for friends or people merely on wins alone. I’m voting for people who make a difference AND win at Magic.

The highlighted individuals are NOT my picks, I thought I might give you insight into why they may or may not be who I select and giving you the why. I just wanted to say “Thanks” for reading and good luck. I look forward to hearing your feedback…

In the design of “real” sports, an athlete is measured by their foot-speed, bench press or even vertical leap. While playing high school and college baseball, I had been asked to participate in several drills and practices that allowed me and my potential to be “measured.” Football players go through the NFL Combine to add or take away from a players college accolades or statistics. It’s almost a way to chisel through any propaganda or marketing that might be added from their respective programs or “soft” athletic divisions. As most people don’t consider Magic to be a “sport”, it might be very difficult to argue (successfully) that there just might be certain indicators that would lead to a person’s success.

Back in the day, a couple of old friends of mine decided that we would form a team called ‘the Goodfellas.’ Not only did we take the name from one of the greatest gangster/mob films ever but we felt that it was something that we could identify with. The three of us weren’t just friends, but we had proven (at least on a local level) that we could play Magic by winning a variety of local tourneys as well as other random events. We added 3 more players, who had also displayed proficiency in the game. Whether it be by creating decks or winning with them, we invited these individuals based on a shared vote and open debate amongst the original three. A lot of times, people choose teams based on friendships or perhaps the fact that someone had enough cards to support the group. Our dedication was based on a goal of complete success. That PTQ season, all six of us qualified for Pro Tour Chicago.

Back to the point, if I could be a Pro Tour Magic scout, what would I look for to determine whether or not I have a future LSV or Jon Finkel in my sights? Now, let’s say I’m Dr Frankenstein and I’m trying to transform some random blob into a Pro Tour Champion. Here’s what I’d look for:

1. Any sign of intelligence – Jon Finkel MUST have a high IQ! While I’m merely speculating, based on what I know about the man outside of Magic he’s got a decent pedigree (meaning college education). Now this isn’t to say that a person who DOESN’T have a college degree should sell their cards and start signing up for your local weekly putt-putt golf league, nor does it mean that a person from Harvard automatically wins at this game. It just means that MANY of the Pro Tour Champions I know and have met ooze intelligence. Finkel, Vargas, De Rosa, Long, Gary, Buehler, Mowshowitz… the list goes on and on of people who are clearly higher education people. This game is one of analysis, logic and fundamental rules. Intelligence, in theory provides the essentials to succeed provided you can utilize it through those elements. What it also means, is that a person will ask to be enlightened or that a person will do whatever it takes to educate themselves toward success. I don’t believe a person wins at Magic alone. Intelligence, to me, isn’t the presences of knowledge but the desire to obtain knowledge.
2. Speed – Not too many people mention this, but speed is a HUGE factor in successful pro play. I’m not talking 100 meter dash speed. I’m talking about the ability to make a decision. The ability to analyze and take action. I’ll assume MOST of you are reading this via computer and that computer is probably NOT a 486DX computer or a Pentium 3. Generally, computer people want higher memory (RAM) systems or processors. Why do I know this? Because we don’t want to spend countless seconds waiting on our computers to think! As professional Magic has evolved, rounds are shorter so game play needs to go faster and it requires players to play accordingly. In Swiss play, one draw is forgivable but 2 might as well be a loss. I’ve known superior magic players who just take too long to play and they end swiss play at 5 wins 0 losses and 3 draws. Most of the time, speed play is something that is not identified or easily improved. Think “Speed Chess”. I typically play at the speed of my opponent. If you control the tempo of the match, you control the opponent.
3. Desire – I just finished watching Rocky V so forgive me for my rather obscure references. (Then again, if you’ve read my stuff before, I’m typically full of random references.) The desire to win is something that cannot be taught. The Rocky movies always fire me up because they ignite pieces of me that has always been competitive or to reach for that which is best. Years before the ALL-POWERFUL DCI, people played tournaments to win and if it was decided that you didn’t have a chance to win most people continued to play for pride. Now that everyone with a 1500 rating or higher thinks they have a chance of qualifying by rating (which is normally 2050+), they drop from tournaments whenever they are at 2 losses. Now there are several things I want to say about this, if you’re rating is LESS than 1950, STOP worrying about your rating! In the PTQ circuit, you need to TOP 8 two consecutive qualifiers to earn close to 100 points (admittedly a lot of that depends on the field). Even Top 8 for a Grand Prix rarely gains you more than 150. I hear so many people ask “what was your rating” etc and they do this to feel better about losing those hard earned points they gained playing FNM. My advice to anyone who thinks they’re better than their tournament result would be to keep playing. Unless you’re going to draft or play in another event, keep playing to see whether it was your playing skill or simply your choice in deck. If you desire to be successful you MUST keep playing. I’m not saying one should ignore their rating altogether, I’m simply saying that your true rating is based on your ability to PLAY. Doing this also gives you the opportunity to regain some of those lost points. Successful Magic play is not like purchasing a lottery ticket and scratching off “WINNER”, it’s an endless pursuit of perfection or perhaps something close. Now going back to sports examples, professional scouts ALWAYS indicate personal traits in their reports. In the NFL, a prospects affiliations can be considered important information into the type of employee they are considering. Will they have the heart to play under pressure or perhaps find that a hangnail will keep the person out of the game rather than leading to a comeback.
4. Physique – I’m sure many of you are going to disagree with me on this. I believe that a person’s physical health has a lot to do with whether or not they are equipped to play this game. Obviously, we’re not running miles or doing anything strenuous at all. Shaquille O’Neal comes to mind, as one of THE most dominating forces in the NBA, basically got fat and unable to play his position. He’s still (at 7+ feet tall) a VERY imposing figure, but I think that he’s really just weighed himself down and has become slow. It isn’t like he had a perimeter game, he dunked the ball 20 times a night and did nothing but dominate the floor. I just think that when he does get the ball, he doesn’t have the reflexes or the ability to quickly take charge anymore.

Speaking of slow, with all of the fast food that is available at our locations here in Florida, one could imagine getting a bit lethargic after a nice super-sized value meal. Is it possible that the physical state of your body can effect your mental state? I know some players who won’t eat anything during the course of a tournament. Weight gain is another thing that I think affects every aspect of your day. I believe it not only slows your body down but impairs decision making as well. Maybe not to a state of unconsciousness, but enough to take away the endurance that you might have have had at one time or it keeps you alert and awake. It’s only natural to get older, get lazy and quite frankly get fat. Perhaps maybe, this is why we feel old. this is why we feel like we can’t do the things we used to, because we conditioned ourselves to be unable to do those “things”. This is just a theory as there aren’t too many well chiseled Pro Tour Champions out there HA-HA. However, many of our champs are relatively young and presumably in better shape.

Maybe, I’m a bit abstract, but I tend to think there’s more to successful magic than just shuffling 60 cards. While the mind may do majority of the work for us, the body carries out the actions that the mind suggests. I hope this random jargon hasn’t bored you too much, I’m gonna get a big mac :)

Yesterday Lee Steht accepted an invitation from the DCI and Wizards of the Coast to be a member of the Magic the Gathering Pro Tour Hall of Fame selection committee. In his acceptance Lee said:
