Those look absolutely terrible. You shouldn’t be giving anyone advice on how to paint anything. Your color matching and application of paint are both putrid, so even if you weren’t visually successful, perhaps you were conceptually.

I believe there is an issue about painting on the backs, borders, text boxes… and everywhere else that isn’t a part of the art. Everything else can be obscuring information, or even an attempt to hide the counterfeit status of a card. For example, I saw someone get told that a card wasn’t allowed because the artist signed in the text box, but another was allowed because the artist signed over the art.

To echo dale’s sentiment, it’s ultimately the head judges call on legality. If you can’t feel a difference and the altering doesn’t mark the cards in some way then most judges are going to be fine with it. One thing to worry about is just making sure you’re not getting any strategic advice on the card. Writing “bash with me” on a darksteel colossus is probably fine, but “save me for baneslayer” on an oblivion ring probably isn’t.

Now how did I know someone was going to ask about tournament legality? Keep in mind that the recent article on tournament legality was written about Competitive and above events, like a Grand Prix or a Pro Tour. When I am had judge, my rule is for FNM or any regular REL event I hold cards to the same standard as a foil, if you can tell it is altered by the thickness or the bend of the card, or if you can reliably cut to it, it’s illegal. If it looks like you painted it to be misleading on purpose to be deceptive, it’s illegal. Other than that play it! For Competitive REL and above except for Legacy/Vintage events I would say pretty much don’t use them unless it is a very small alter that doesn’t change much of the card at all.

In the end, you should always have an unaltered version of the card available, and check with the head judge of your tournament before you start.

It is my understanding that those Leeches would not be legal, due to the paint on the black card border. Can you elaborate on what is legal (for Competitive REL) and what isn’t, for card alterations? Thanks!
