Kozilek, Butcher of Truth
We have our first sighting of an Eldrazi. Wizards has previewed ‘Kozilek, Butcher of Truth’ on their website as part of the Eye of Ugin ‘Daily Arcana’ – Take a look!
Kozilek, Butcher of Truth {10}
Legendary Creature – Eldrazi
When you cast Kozilek, Butcher of Truth draw four cards.
Annihilator 4
(Whenever this creature attacks, defending player sacrifices four permanents.)
When Kozilek, Butcher of Truth is put into a graveyard from anywhere, its owner shuffles his or her graveyard into his or her library.
12/12
Michael Kormarck
6/248
We believe he is one of 10-12 Eldrazi in the upcoming block.
Who is to say this card is good? without knowing the rest of the set, but what intrigued me the most is the collector number, which in this case is 6/248
annihilator is cool but i want to see it on smaller creatures
because it’s colorless, but an artifact . . . . there really hasn’t been such a card (except Ghostfire, which is technically red) so they can order the set how they wish.
And . . . 12/12 for 10 plus four cards plus 4 permenants ISN’T good? o.O
The card is good if decks can cast a 10 (or effectively 9 with Eye of Ugin) mana finisher. If this was Rav-Time Spiral block with Tron in Standard, I could see this getting played, especially since the combination of Tolaria West and Eye of Ugin tutors this guy.
Adding Teferi and casting two of this guy a turn is a nice draw engine as well.
Sadly this isn’t 2007, and often games end in a turn or two if you stumble on your 4th land drop.
He’s not as good as Karn in a colorless EDH deck. :S
Still, white control decks are casting Iona (whether it be MWC or UWC) and although he doesn’t work well with Emeria, drawing 4 cards in mono white is pretty good. He’s at least a 5-for-1, the best topdeck ever.
Here’s the thing, Rise of the Eldrazi is either going to slow the game down or speed the game up, and another value is it could some combo viable. Those are three things that could happen, right? Right now this guy is borderline playable in some decks, I think. If Rise makes the game faster, of course he won’t be playable, however I think the game’s going to slow down a bit and be less hostile to control decks (it already is with Worldwake imo) then he could be good.
Does the collector number give us enough information to determine whether or not this will be a completely colorless set?
@Kevin: Well, sets are currently sorted by card number like this:
[White cards A-Z]
[Blue cards A-Z]
[Black cards A-Z]
[Red cards A-Z]
[Green cards A-Z]
[Artifacts A-Z]
[Lands A-Z]
In Shards, all multicolor cards were together slipped between Green cards and Artifacts. In Shadowmoor, all five Hybrid pairs were treated sort of as “colors 6-10″ between Green and Artifacts.
Since the Eldrazi is #6, I’m going to assume they’re putting colorless up front before White. By this logic, the set could only be colorless if there existed only 5 cards with names beginning with A-Ko and there must be 242 cards with names beginning with Kp-Z… There’s no way.
Also an all-colorless set would be absolutely bizarre and make for a weird Limited. Maybe a lot of colorless cards? (Ghostfire was still numbered with Red cards in Future Sight, so “~ is colorless” cards with colored mana could still be numbered with their color).
What’s not to like? Essentially, he’s a 12/12 beatstick for 10 colorless mana. When cast, you draw four cards, which can potentially make or break your game.
Plus, with the Annihilator mechanic, your opponent (the defending player) is forced to sacrifice four permanents, which bypasses his permanents’ shroud, troll-shroud, and indestructibility if there is any.
Finally, his last ability is similar to the two “refuse to die” fatties Progenitus and Darksteel Colossus, but with a twist; he brings your entire graveyard with him, so you can potentially recast him along with any other cards that might have wound up there.
Also, in this standard environment, there are many, many ways to sneak him into play (like Polymorph, Summoning Trap, Elvish Piper, massive mana ramp, etc.). Granted, you won’t get the extra four cards in your hand, but you’ll get a pretty enormous creature nonetheless.
Cast Eldrazi Monument with this guy, give him shroud, and you’ll be all set. But then again, we’ll just have to see the rest of the set in order to really, thoroughly judge him.
well, there goes any chance of Mill being playable.
This guy is not an artifact. Therefore, he doesn’t follow the artifact rules of collector’s numbers. Most likely, WOTC included colorless (and by colorless, I mean no colored mana symbols in the mana cost), non-artifact cards at the beginning.
We don’t know for sure, but we do know that non-artifact colorless cards is new ground.
i just wanted to say that this card is the 6th in the set which means that there can be only less than 5 colored spells in the set. i think this set is going to be all colorless and awesome
@Jay Thanks, I didn’t know that.
i love this card, i do not know if i would ever play with it, but i will hope they print some great mill cards to make this epic.
=( I hope this kind of card isn’t everywhere, it will make for terrible power creep
this card is AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! maybe he will see tourney play maybe not, eye of ugin is selling for $15 right now! He is a fantastic edh general where he is a +5 everytime you cast him. In edh, it’s not too hard to do with monoliths and mana vaults. him + lightning grieves is ridonculous. turn 1 land, mindstone. turn 2 land, sol ring, chalice, lightning grievwes. turn 3 land, mana vault, big K, grieves, smash face!
Kozilek looks extremely fun. What I’m afraid of in standard isn’t him, but rather the fact that Annihilator is a named ability. If they start printing 2 drops with Annihilator 1, that’s what’ll be OP in RoE. In standard, Kozilek himself won’t see play outside of Polymorph unless there is a lot of colorless ramp or more cards like Eye of Ungin to drop the cost of these beasts. My guess is there are 6 of these Eldrazi ‘demi-god’ type creatures. Whether the other colorless non-artifact cards in here are of Eldrazi type is questionable, but even with the Eye they won’t be as OP as Affinity since the Eye is legendary and only drops mana cost by 2.
Wow, I get a WW fat pack, open my first ever mythic (eye of ugin), and then go WTF? this is pointlessand get all annoyed. Then I see this guy. :)
i think this is a fake look at the card the design , the collector number is mysterious an i thibk the card is to powerful
@timtam – The card is definitely real, it’s posted on Wizards.com
If people are saying that the rest of the cards are colorless then maybe the first 5 are the only colored cards. One for each mana source. Maybe eldrazi for each color too.
I actually liked the art. It reminded me a little of the Cthulhu Mythos, which I think fits the Eldrazi just right.
Would i be considered lucky if i got this card in a booster pack that came with my starter deck?
