A Handful of DCI & GP Rumors

First, the cur­rent rumor is that the 2010 Grand Prix sched­ule will be announced on Thurs­day, Novem­ber 5th. We’ve been eagerly await­ing it for nearly a month now. Though, look­ing back over the pre­vi­ous years, it wasn’t until Nov. 20th 2008 that we got the 2009 sched­ule, and in 2007 it was in Decem­ber when we got an incom­plete 2008 Grand Prix schedule!

The sec­ond tip I’ve received is that the DCI is crack­ing down on pre­mier events (mainly GPs) not being held in their name­sake city, instead being held in a neigh­bor­ing sub­urb or city. This falls on the tour­na­ment orga­niz­ers who lever­age the neaby metrop­o­lis’ name and the lower price of the suburb’s con­ven­tion cen­ter or hall to max­i­mize prof­its from the events. This is a major annoy­ance to play­ers as it can mean long com­mute times from the air­port and breed con­fu­sion about loca­tions or direc­tions. It reflects poorly on Wiz­ards and the DCI as these are events they approved. We will see what this means, and it could be part of the delay in the actual GP sched­ule as they had to shuf­fle or relo­cate some events.

After pub­lish­ing my GP guesses, I received a hand­ful of tips and con­fir­ma­tions sur­round­ing them. It sounds like Grand Prix San Fran­cisco is hap­pen­ing, as well as Grand Prix Syd­ney. The Phillip­ines seem to be hav­ing an event, though I don’t know if it will be in Manila or not. Fur­ther though there is a rumor that Florida and Geor­gia will not be receiv­ing a Grand Prix event next year, which seems unfor­tu­nate as they are well placed to fol­low GP San Juan Puerto Rico.
