ManaNation has received a tip that Wizards of the Coast has decided to end the print run of the Dungeons and Dragons 4th Edition Core Handbooks, instead aiming to turn the game in the direction of “Dungeons and Dragons Essentials”, a product to be released later this year. The first product for the Essentials line is starting with the ‘Dungeons & Dragons Fantasy Roleplaying Game’ also being called ‘the Red Box’ and is due to be released on Sept. 7th, 2010.
It is our understanding that they are not going to be reprinting any of the three main books, the Players Handbook, Dungeon Master Guide and Monster Manual from this point on to allow them to be phased out. No other books have been mentioned.
Update: We have been inundated with requests to provide more proof or out our source. We cannot do either.
As clarification, yes there are plenty of books still in circulation but it was made very clear to our source that they would not be reprinting these books again, so when the circulation runs out, whenever that may be, then there will not be more printed.
Wow, I was expecting a reprint of them (and mm1 and 2) that included the new “errata” and format changes.
OK. They won’t reprint old core books. Big deal. If I didn’t buy them already, I’d buy Essentials for sure. It’s better.
And what is the source of this rumor? Sounds like a bunch of fear mongering. At least it does right now until more information about “The Source” becomes available.
Finally. It’s past time that they killed off the 3 core book model. $100 for 3 core books has been a huge barrier to entry, especially when those books don’t actually teach you the game or give you everything you need to get started.
$20 for the red box… yes please!
$20 for all the game play rules in one reference? ‘Bout time!
I forsaw the end of the core book model right when Essentials was announced. Just because the core book stuff will still be legal doesn’t mean they will still keep it in print.
Further ‘evidence:’ the Shadow soucrebook due early 2011 is titled “Player Options: Heroes of Shadow” and is softcover, which is a further break from the hardcover ‘Martial/Divine/Arcane/XXX Power’ titles.
Umm… Really? “The Red Box” ? You mean I have to by The Red Box again? Doesn’t anybody have a sense of history?
Jeeze… smells of hoax…
(The Red Box was the color of the box Basci D&D came in back in the day for those too young to know better.)
o.k. willing to admit I’m wrong – http://www.wizards.com/dnd/Article.aspx?x=dnd/drfe/20100706 – but from a publishing perspective I don’t know if this is the right direction.
Then again though the heavy release of all the extra books was killing the new edition.. way too many hard covers, way too much money.
@ Linus not a rumor look at all the new books on Amazon.com and now I am ROTFLMAO on all the gullible marks who bought into Hasbro’s blatant attempt to suck your wallets dry. 4.0 is the worst rip-off since the game started back in the 70′s.
And here’s another thing *not* being said:
WotC is making it clear that Essentials doesn’t replace anything already in 4E. HOWEVER, Essentials is only the 10 products released this fall.
So, stuff after Essentials could replace current stuff. We shall see… For instance, if Players Options: Heroes of Shadow is followed by Players Options: Martial Heroes…
And for the record, I love 4E and I love even more that WotC is willing to grow the game based off what they have learned the past two years. I’m also glad they are finally changing marketing strategies. So,I for one, llok forward to Players Options!
What next? 2011 – D&D 5th edition?
this is why you should have all stuck with AD&D and OD&D :-)
According to a store owner who contacted his WotC rep, this rumor is not entirely accurate.

So, yeah, no print run because of the huge inventory, but no plans to discontinue the line.
ok would somebody at Mananation please post some proof or evidence to go with this post? Or should we file this next to “Batboy”, “Satan’s Face seen in The BP Oil leak”, or “I Married Bigfoot” category.
I mean come one something to back this up.
“this is why you should have all stuck with AD&D and OD&D :-)”
Not really. Stuck with it why? To play in some glorified Sword&Sorcery system from the 1970s? If you want to continue to play AD&D or OD&D, run with it, but saying every gamer out there should stick with something as antiquated is equally asinine.
This is going to be so poorly received I cant even describe how much I don’t wanna deal with this as part of my job. http://bit.ly/dt9BUs
