Duels of the Planeswalkers Physical Decks

Today Wizards has announced physical pre-constructed decks inspired by the Xbox ‘Duels of the Planeswalkers’ game. The information on these is scant.

Decks will contain 60 cards and one 15 card Magic 2010 Core set booster pack. And the MSRP will be $14.99.

Release Date: June 4th, 2010.

  1. I like the idea. Id be interested to see which decks they choose to build. My only issue is the pack that comes with it. You get a pack of M10, which will only be standard legal for a month or two AFTER the pre-cons are released. Wouldn’t an M11 booster be better for marketing?

  2. @David — M10 will be standard legal until the end of 2010. (not the day after M11 is released). I’m sure there are some packaging/logistical issues with including a pack of M11 at this point in time.

First off I want to say that this is an excellent marketing tactic designed around new player acquisition.

If Duels of the Planeswalker was such a huge hit, (which I hear it was), the next logical step would be to transition those newly acquired players to paper magic. And what better way than a pre-constructed deck of card they’re familiar with!

Infact this is such a good idea that it SHOULD have been the incentive to buy Duels of the Planeswalker in the first place. (instead of the foil Garruk Wildspeaker that I never received) [yeah, I went there].

All and all new player acquisition is good for the game, and even though this announcement isn’t targeted at me, (a competitive player), I commend Wizard’s for their efforts at trying continually trying to reach new players with the game I love so dearly.

btw WotC, if you wanted to mail me that foil Garruk I’d still be wiling to accept it.

  3. To clarify, 2010 is legal until the new block expansion becomes legal in October. For about 3 months, 2010 and 2011 will be legal together.

  4. With that price it’s doubtful, but I wonder if you get a physical copy of the planeswalker for each deck.

  5. I had the same issue with the Garruk promotion. After calling Customer Service and resolving the issue with my promo code not being valid, I waited the full 8 weeks from when they told me they had mailed out the latest batch of Garruk promos but to no avail. I emailed Customer Service 2 weeks ago (about 11 weeks and counting) and they were willing to re-send me a promo card. Fingers crossed it arrives before summertime! Anyhow, it seems that if you inquired about it, they would have mailed you another one.
